Texas Governor Declares ERCOT Reform An Emergency Item on Legislative Agenda – Ya Think? [Opinion]
Did you know... there is such a thing as the Electric Reliability Council of Texas? Commonly referred to as ERCOT, this is apparently the governing body in Texas over preparedness and energy needs within the state. I think we can safely say that this 'governing body' fumbled this current deep freeze emergency rather badly as we still have millions of Texans with no power for over 24 hours and no relief in sight as the temps dipped below 0 all over the state last night. Governor Greg Abbott issued a Press Release today showing his concerns about this agency and has made it a legislative priority in the upcoming session in Austin. Read the Governor's release below:
AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott today declared the reform of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) an emergency item this legislative session. In declaring this item an emergency, the Governor is calling on the legislature to investigate ERCOT and ensure Texans never again experience power outages on the scale they have seen over the past several days.
“The Electric Reliability Council of Texas has been anything but reliable over the past 48 hours,” said Governor Abbott. “Far too many Texans are without power and heat for their homes as our state faces freezing temperatures and severe winter weather. This is unacceptable. Reviewing the preparations and decisions by ERCOT is an emergency item so we can get a full picture of what caused this problem and find long-term solutions. I thank my partners in the House and Senate for acting quickly on this challenge, and I will work with them to enhance Texas’ electric grid and ensure that our state never experiences power outages like this again.”
In my humble opinion, the fact that Texas lost seemingly about a quarter of it's electricity-producing capability when the windmills in West Texas froze up is a real eye-opener to just how insane the green new deal might be. I have always been an advocate for 'all of the above' when it comes to energy production, but wind and solar ain't up to the task yet, until it is or another clean-energy source is discovered, well let's just say if you want your iPhone to charge every time you plug it in...

Trying to get away from what we know works is literally killing people as we speak. I know, I know, what about the planet! We (USA) are not the problem when it comes to polluting the planet, not like we used to be. Plus, we get better at cleaning it up every year. You wanna fix the world, go ahead, pack your stuff and head out to the other countries that need the help. The US started working on fixing that pollution problem decades ago and it's paying off. I'm not saying we can't do it better, but 'better' comes through innovation and technology, not from making people suffer when it's too cold or too hot.
The human condition should be the priority in the US. I sincerely pray for those who are suffering right now, I hope we don't lose many to this current deep freeze. As for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, I hope they can pull their collective heads out of their collective backsides and fix the problem that got us here in the first place. Governor Abbott, please fix this, your job might depend on it.
