The Texarkana, Texas Police SWAT Team took Michael Jordan, 25, of Texarkana, Ark., safely into custody early this morning following an almost four-hour standoff in the 2200 block of Bell Street.

Patrol officers were dispatched to the residence at 1:44 a.m. today, July 16, after a 9-1-1 call was received in which the homeowner said that Jordan had broken into his former girlfriend’s house and was armed with a handgun. The girlfriend’s mother and a 16-year-old managed to escape when he entered the house – leaving only Jordan and the former girlfriend inside the home.

Other 9-1-1 callers reported hearing at least one shot being fired inside the residence, but they did not know if anyone was injured.

Upon arrival, officers reported they discovered Jordan had barricaded himself inside the residence and was holding the former girlfriend at gunpoint. Officers set up a perimeter around the house and tried to contact Jordan by phone.

Although Jordan refused to answer their calls, he reportedly called 9-1-1 and talked to a dispatcher at length telling them that he had a gun and was holding the former girlfriend hostage. The decision was made to activate the SWAT team to help resolve the situation. A negotiator responded to the Communications Center to speak to Jordan, who reportedly refused to speak to anyone at the scene.

Following several hours of almost constant communication between Jordan and the negotiators, he reportedly agreed to leave the weapons inside and exit the house.  After both Jordan and the hostage came out the front door together, he released her and she walked to safety.  However, Jordan then allegedly indicated that he would not surrender.

Officers continued to talk to Jordan as he paced the area of the yard directly in front of the porch for approximately 15 minutes. When Jordan turned to go back into the house, SWAT officers successfully deployed a flashbang device and fired two rounds from a JPX 450 Cobra pepper gun. A flashbang is a non-lethal explosive device used to temporarily disorient a subject's senses. It is designed to produce a blinding flash of light and an intensely loud noise "bang" of greater than 170 decibels without causing permanent injury.

Jordan was then quickly taken into custody without injury and transported to the Bi-State Jail. He was charged with Burglary with Intent to Commit Assault – Family Violence.  He also had a felony Arkansas Probation Violation warrant, as well as three Texarkana, Texas Class C Misdemeanor warrants.

The victim suffered a cut to her face in what police say they believe is the result of Jordan striking her with the gun. She was transported to a local hospital by family members, where she was treated and released.
