This guy is handsome, sweet and loves to cuddle. Sounds like the perfect date! Byron (who also answers great to Max) is one of the most-fantastic dogs that I have taken photos of at the shelter in recent weeks. He has a GREAT disposition. He also has a fun sense of humor.

He is listed as a German Shepherd mix but after spending some time with him yesterday I believe he is possibly a Great Pyrenees mix. His pearly white teeth say he is very young. His character says that he will be a loyal companion that will make sure his family is safe and on lazy days he would love to curl up on the couch with you.

Byron has soft, fluffy black fur with brindle legs. Unique coloring! He walks so great on a leash that I wasn't sure he was still there. No pulling or jerking. A very intelligent dog with a low energy level. If you don't run down to the shelter and adopt this dog you could possibly be missing out on the dog of a lifetime.

Byron's Videos

The Animal Care and Adoption Center in Texarkana, Ark. is our only animal shelter in town. They have a few hundred dogs and cats that need to be reclaimed or adopted. Room is always an issue at a city animal shelter.

Below, take video tours of the adoption floor and holding areas at the animal shelter in Texarkana. There are gorgeous puppies, pittbulls, black Labradors, German Shepherd mixes and many other breeds of dogs. Watch the videos to see if there is a dog for you and please share these videos with others. These videos were taken at the end of December so some of these dogs may not still be at the shelter.

The dogs in the holding area are waiting for their owners to reclaim them or for space to open on the adoption floor upstairs. Many will never make it upstairs. Some of these dogs may be reunited with their owners if the videos are shared on social media because many folks just don't know that they need to go to the shelter to look for their missing pets.

Talking Dogs in Holding Area

Be sure to turn up the sound so you can hear the puppies talking to me as I was filming them. There are several dogs that respond to questions, and wait until you hear the husky yodel. There is a beautiful black Great Dane at about 4:50 in the video. Sad state of affairs for this boy because he has a hurt leg. There are some very sweet puppies all along the way in the tour.

Approximately two minutes into the video there are some adorable puppies and one of them keeps talking to me. It is so sweet!

The dogs in the holding area can also be adopted if their three or five day hold is up.

NEW shelter Facebook page

It is so unfortunate that there are thousands of dogs that are euthanized every year in our local shelter when there are so many dogs that would make fabulous pets. Please help us make a difference by spreading the word. Share this post on your Facebook page and Tweet about it, too.

The shelter's adoption fees range from $40 to $144, depending on the gender and size of the animal or whether they have been spayed or neutered yet. You can also have your pet micro-chipped for only $20 right at the shelter! That way if your pet is ever lost, he can be returned to you quickly.

If you would like to foster a dog contact the shelter to get information about dog rescues in our area that can help.

The Animal Care and Adoption Center is located at 203 Harrison St., Texarkana, Ark. 71854 and is open Monday through Saturday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
