Location of the 43rd Annual Festival of the Forest Changed
The 43rd annual Kiamichi Owa-Chito Festival of the Forest is set for June 18-20 in Broken Bow. The event is normally held at Beavers Bend Resort Park, however, due to the flooding in that area the event has been moved to the Broken Bow City Park.
The purpose of Kiamichi Owa-Chito, Inc. is to stage an annual Festival of the Forest in an effort to acquaint the people of Oklahoma, and the world, with the beauty, heritage, culture, industry and progress in Kiamichi Country.
The spirit and the heritage of the forests comes to life as men and women compete in forestry contests that show off their skills from living in the outdoors. Some of the contests include ax throwing, double buck sawing, jack-n-jill crosscut, as well as other forestry events. The winner is crowned the "Bull of the Woods" and a new award given out to group contests -- "Crew if the Woods."
A large art show is one of the major attractions of the festival as well. New additions to this year’s festival also include the "All American Lumberjack Show" and Kids Camp, a Fiddle Contest and Miss Choctaw Owa-Chito. There will also be plenty of live entertainment during this three-day event. Bluegrass, country, Native American, jazz, gospel and rock will be some of the genres featured. Make sure to bring the kids because there will be plenty of children's games and family activities.
Other activities include a 5K run, basketball, horseshoes, turkey and owl calling, Miss Choctaw Owa-Chito and Battle of the Bands to name a few.
"All events will continue on as usual except for the canoe races, and we are scaling back on the art show this year. We hope that the residents of Broken Bow will understand as well and we apologize for any inconveniences this may cause," said Charity O'Donnell, the Executive Director with the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce and McCurtain County Tourism.
Any other changes to the scheduled events will be announced soon. For further information please call the Broken Bow Chamber of Commerce at 580-584-3393 or visit their website.
