Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 3, as an estimated 70 volunteers from the Junior League of Texarkana will purchase new shoes at Payless Shoe Source in the Richmond Ranch Shopping Center for children in need in our community. Since the project began, an estimated 3,000 children from Liberty Eylau ISD, Pleasant Grove ISD, Texarkana, Ark., ISD and Texarkana, Texas ISD have benefited  through this Junior League program. What began as a project for new members of the Junior League in 2004 became a semi-annual event in 2005 held once in the spring and once in the fall.

“Shoes for the Soul is such an important project for our community because it provides children in need with shoes for no cost to their family,” said Megan Shirley, event co-chair. “As a teacher, I see the need on a daily basis in my own students and the difference a pair of properly-fitting shoes makes in their day.”

Shirley estimates that nearly 1,200 children will receive shoes through the program this year.

The event is sponsored by Junior League of Texarkana with the help of Payless, The Transit Department of Texarkana, and the many businesses and partners that donate to the Junior League throughout the year. This event is funded by the community's support of our fundraisers, Mistletoe Fair and Touch-a-Truck.

The Junior League of Texarkana is an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
