A woman is telling law enforcement authorities that she shot her husband in the stomach early this morning in self defense.

The Bowie County Sheriff's Office said it received a call at 1:52AM from a woman in the 500 block of County Road 3102 in New Boston who said she had just shot her husband.

Deputies Danny French and Sgt. Curtis Cole were dispatched to the call for assistance. Upon their arrival, they met with Kimberlea Batson who escorted the deputies to her injured husband Jeremy Batson. Mr. Batson was found lying on bed holding a towel over a gunshot wound. Medical personnel arrived and transported Mr. Batson to a hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Mrs. Batson informed deputies that she and her husband had gotten into an argument. Mr. Batson asked her to leave their home. Mrs. Batson told her husband she was not properly dressed to leave the home at that time.

According to sheriff's deputies, it was at this time that Mrs. Batson said she noticed Mr. Batson got a look in his eyes like he has had in the past when he is getting ready to assault her. She allegedly retreated to a bedroom and locked the door. While Mrs. Batson was reportedly attempting to barricade this door, Mr. Batson allegedly kicked it open forcing his way into the bedroom. Mrs. Batson retrieved a handgun from underneath the mattress of the bed. She fired a warning shot from the handgun into the wall of the bedroom over Mr. Batson’s head. Mr. Batson continued towards Mrs. Batson as she retreated into the corner of the bedroom.

When Mrs. Batson was no longer able to withdraw herself from Mr. Batson, she shot him once in the stomach and called 9-1-1. Mr. Batson was taken to the LSU hospital in Shreveport where he is listed in critical but stable condition. The investigation into this shooting is ongoing.
