Copper Thefts have been more frequent as of late in the Texarkana Area.

Over the last few weeks the Texarkana, Texas Police responded to numerous reports
of copper thefts. The suspect(s) in the thefts removed copper components from outside air conditioner units, and at times removed the entire units. The thefts occurred primarily at vacant businesses and homes.

Citizens are encouraged to be mindful of vacant properties near their homes and report any suspicious vehicle or suspect information to the police department. Detective Lewis wants to provide citizens with some useful tips to assist in preventing copper thefts.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to place video cameras and motion sensing lighting near the outside units. Detective Lewis advised the suspect(s) usually break down the units after the thefts making them hard to identify when they are sold.

Citizens are encouraged to paint or engrave markings on the air conditioning units to
assist in identifying the components. Residents and business owners can also place cages or alarm systems on the units. Several manufactures provide alarms systems that will produce audible sounds then the unit has a sudden pressure drop from a cut a/c line.

Anyone with information on copper thefts or any other crime is asked to contact the Texarkana, Texas Police Department at 903-798-3116 or CrimeStoppers at 903-793-STOP (7867).
