Texarkana College Cosmetology will host the seventh annual Shear Madness Avant Garde Hair and Fashion Show.

The event will be this Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 1PM to 4PM on the Texarkana College main campus in the Truman Arnold Student Center.

Cosmetology students battle it out on the runway in a fierce competition that pushes students to embrace a creative edge. Using human hair, students create elaborate designs to adorn a runway model that represents an all-out design theme.

"Shear Madness offers a unique opportunity for students to experience an industry level design competition," Brandon Dixon, TC Cosmetology Instructor said. "The annual competition provides a chance for students to embrace creative design concepts to elevate their talents in ways they never thought possible."

Cosmetology students from across Northeast Texas, Southwest Arkansas, and nearby schools in Louisiana have been invited to participate in the competition.

"Students have been preparing for Shear Madness for weeks by practicing advanced techniques to incorporate into their design," Dixon said. "This year, instructors from the Wella Professionals School Partnership taught advanced classes for TC students to help them prepare for the competition and will serve as a corporate sponsor for the event."

TC Cosmetology students have also learned state-of-the-art techniques through a partnership program with industry leader, Pivot Point USA.

“Not only do they have access to emerging trends by TC’s participation as a Pivot Point Member school, but students also learn the importance of giving back to their community and supporting a charitable cause through their work,” Dixon said. “As a charitable initiative, Pivot Point USA supports the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. To help raise funds as well as awareness for this cause, TC will donate all Shear Madness proceeds collected from team entry fees to the charity.”

Admission is free for spectators but organizers are encouraging guests to arrive early to find a seat.

“Last year over 400 people attended the event and that number is expected to grow this year,” Dixon said. “The word is getting out about the incredible work these students showcase and how intricate the designs are year after year.  This year’s show will be one of the best yet!”
