It is always scary to hear that treats you may have purchased for your dog could harm him. The recall goes beyond the basic rawhide chew pictured above. There are many variations of rawhide chews included in these recalls.

United Pet Group has issued a voluntary recall on rawhide dog chew products. Below is a list of their brands that fall under the recall. The company recalled its products after finding that unsafe chemicals were used during manufacturing of the chews.

The recall also includes:

  • American Beefhide
  • Digest-eeze
  • Healthy Hide
  • Companion
  • Dentley’s
  • Essential Everyday
  • Exer-Hides
  • Good Lovin’ or Petco brand
  • Hill Country Fare
  • Priority Pet products with expiration dates June 1, 2019 through May 31, 2020
  • Enzadent or Dentahex with expiration dates June 1, 2021 through May 31, 2022.

The reason for the recall, manufacturing facilities that the company uses, that are located outside of the United States, were using a "quaternary ammonium compound mixture" which is an anti-microbial chemical. The compound has not been approved in the United States as a processing aid in the production of rawhide chews for dogs and has been known to cause diarrhea and vomiting as well as reduced appetite. Depending on severity of the symptoms, pet owners may need to take their dog to the vet for treatment. Consumers can return the affected products to the store they were purchased from for a full refund.
