The Arkansas High Razorback Band Director Gary Meggs has received a high honor.

The Recording Academy and Grammy Museum recently announced the 2019 Music Educator Award semifinalists. Over 2,800 initial nominations were submitted from all 50 states. Arkansas High School band director Gary Meggs is one of only 25 semifinalists named for this prestigious award.

The Music Educator Award recognizes educators who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education in schools. Each year, one recipient is selected and recognized for their remarkable impact on students’ lives. The honoree will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.

Mr. Meggs received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Music Education from Henderson State University.  Prior to becoming the AHS Band Director, Mr. Meggs was the director of jazz graduate studies at the University of Arkansas. Additionally, Mr. Meggs has served as director and coordinator of bands/music at schools across the state of Texas.

The Glenn Miller Orchestra, 106th Army National Guard band, and East Texas Wind Symphony are only a few of the organizations in which Gary Meggs has played as a guest artist. In 2010, he was selected to conduct the Four States Bandmaster’s Jazz Honor Band.

“We are proud to have Mr. Meggs as the band director in the Texarkana Arkansas School District,” commented Dr. Becky Kesler, superintendent. “His experience and love for music and his students has propelled our band program to the next level. Being named a semifinalist by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum is a testament to the gifts and talents he brings to our band program.”
